I’ve very much enjoyed watching the China technology scene for CNET Asia over the past year. Also, Juniper Foo and the team at CNET Asia have been great supporters, and I appreciate their invitation to keep this blog for the past year and their ongoing support. This long-time geek and tech veteran, who also blogs under the handle Imagethief , uses his wobbly Mandarin, the generous help of his tech-savvy Chinese friends and colleagues, and a constellation of fellow bloggers to keep abreast of the Middle Kingdom’s latest technology trends and developments. Still, my love of hockey never diminished through the years and I never stopped following the NHL game and playing street hockey. I recognized that this team and organization were glory bound that first night I watched them play and my love for The Kings died that instant and my passion for Ducks Hockey was born and is now an obsession. Beyond Scotty, watching Teemu’s scoring touch, the grittiness of Getzlaf and Perry, the defensive play of Paulsson, the willingness and toughness of Parros, the solid goaltending of Jiggy and of course the overall play of Pronger night in and night out is a true joy for any hockey aficionado. I have to agree with many of the critics, The Ducks didn’t get through these past three playoff rounds in the prettiest or the most dominating fashion but like any true championship team they have always found a way to win and I think their best hockey is still ahead of them starting at 5 PM on Monday night. read more

Mike Sando, our Seahawks reporter, won national honors last week when his Seahawks Insider blog was named “best media-affiliated sports blog” in the nation. The award, sponsored by the trade publication Editor & Publisher, is open to news organizations of all sizes, including newspapers, Web sites and magazines. Those of us in the press also knew him as a cheerful, influential and optimistic defender of openness in government, not only in the courts but in the larger realm of public meetings and public records, too. Rowland Thompson, executive director of Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington, noted in an e-mail message last week that Norm played a critical role in passing a shield law to protect confidential sources who bring forth important news stories in Washington state. Thompson said Norm’s support was most critical with the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, who took a “neutral” position on the bill and stayed out of the fight. Out of respect for Norm the other 38, for the most part, sat on their hands and didn’t oppose the bill and WAPA’s lobbyist wasn’t ordered to stop it. read more

They use their online journals (high tech) to show off their handmade creations (low tech) and share their techniques, resources and DIY headaches. The thriving craft blog community has a sort of “town square” at Whipup. Whipup aims to cover the bases, so posts range from the traditional (binding a quilt) to the off-the-wall (a crochet dinosaur). For the most part, posts link to other blogs or sites, highlighting tutorials, related Flickr galleries or inspiring photographs. If you’ve been known to spend hard-earned money on fabric, yarn or paint, Whipup is worth a spot on your daily “must-click” list. read more

Business Tech | Cutting Edge | Access | Threats | Media 2. Yesterday Google launched its new online security blog . In its initial post, Google clarifies its now-famous one-in-10 Web sites are malicious statement derived from a presentation Niels Provos, Dean McNamee, Panayiotis Mavrommatis, Ke Wang and Nagendra Modadugu gave at last month’s Hotbots 2007 . There’s also a colorful map in today’s post showing which countries are responsible for hosting compromised Web sites and distribution servers (the US and China both appear bright red, with Canada and Russia coming in a close second on each map). Frequent users of the search engine may have seen statements under site names indicating that Google suspects a given site may be harmful to your PC. This is curious since major security vendors, Symantec, Trend Micro, and McAfee currently offer products that overlay online search results with similar warnings. read more

In short, the news/blog site Engadget (Gizmodo’s arch-rival) erroneously reported ( apparently, it fell for a hoax from within Apple itself ) that the hotly anticipated iPhone and Leopard OS projects were set for another delay. Certainly, there’s nothing implausible about a product delay — it’s not like Engadget reported that Sinbad was dead or anything . In his apology for the erroneous post, Engadget’s Ryan Block says Engadget (a site that I enjoy and that we occasionally cite here at IT Business Edge ) will work hard to gain back readers’ trust, and basically all the things you expect from such an apology. You won’t see much evidence of broken trust in the thread that follows — most readers are pretty supportive of the popular site. And real differences in the old-line media sites and the blogosphere aren’t as dramatic as Lam’s truism would make it out to be — all big newspapers have sites that they update as news breaks, well in advance of those cumbersome paper things hitting the streets. The real nightmare that blogs present for old-line media is not how quick and smart they are — it’s how incredibly cheap they are to launch and maintain. read more
