The LA Times has a story about a Japanese man who has been wanted on charges of murder for over 25 years, who was finally arrested thanks to him tipping off authorities on his blog that he would be traveling to the US territory of Saipan . Apparently, a few years back he set up a blog, and US police have been monitoring it to see if he would do something so silly as to mention the fact that he’d be traveling to a US territory — which he actually did. From what I read in the article , not only was the case overturned, he truly believes he’s innocent (or he’s trying to hid it really well). We apparently consented to let the Japanese try him rather than doing it ourselves, which happens occasionally (and it seems reasonable, as it was only Japanese nationals involved) That didn’t work out so well. Even if they removed the double-jeopardy provision, common sense would say that it should only apply to cases after the law was put into place. The way things are these days, you should probably update your PSA to include “talking with an American about your travel plans on the telephone” and “e-mailing your travel plans via an American ISP”. read more

The BBC’s political editor, Nick Robinson, has hit back against an early day motion “deploring” his blog about House of Commons Speaker, Michael Martin, and MPs over the parliamentary expenses row. Robinson today posted a response to the EDM, posted by former Labour minister Peter Kilfoyle, which attacked his suggestion that some MPs are too afraid to condemn Martin because he might use his position to punish those who did. The motion, which has already attracted the support of 52 MPs, with others likely to add their names, said it “deplores the innuendo of the blog of Nick Robinson, the BBC’s lobby correspondent, and calls upon him to substantiate the imputation he makes in his blog concerning the speaker and members”. In today’s blog Robinson also posits various “theories” about what lies behind the anger of Kilfoyle and the other MPs, including the suggestion that “MPs loathe the intrusion into their private lives that’s resulted from increased transparency” from legislation such as the Freedom of Information Act. In yesterday’s blog, Robinson suggested that some MPs had rallied behind the speaker because he “acts as shop steward for MPs and many fear that the media will come for them next”. The row comes amid mounting criticism of MPs’ expenses, which has led to the withdrawal of the Conservative whip from Derek Conway and calls for the resignation of Martin, after his press spokesman Mike Granatt quit at the weekend, claiming he had been misled about taxi expenses incurred by the speaker’s wife. read more

You’ve said you don’t expect to sign any of your free agents before the market opens. I’ve been around guys now who really like football and maybe aren’t the sharpest knife in the box, but they find a way to be smart because they like this so much and they’re willing to work and they’re willing to be there every single day. I just think being in a system again for another year, I think he’s got a chance to be a good blocker for us. How much does changing offensive coordinators change the kind of style and skills you’re looking for from offensive players? Those are things that don’t take any talent or don’t take any new type of player. If you want to disagree with something that’s written on the blog, a comment or something the team is doing, that’s fine. But keep it civil and let’s knock off the personal attacks or else I might have to look into blocking people. I don’t want to do it but at the same time this isn’t going to be a place to start cyberspace fights. I didn’t describe the short-handed goal because 1) I didn’t see it and 2) I generally don’t describe goals except on our tight Saturday night deadline because I think that’s lazy writing unless it’s an unusual goal. The reason the same story is posted on the blog and in the paper is so people can read it ASAP after the games. I depend on your blog to keep me updated on my favorite team all the way to Las Vegas. read more

Some Red Wings fans believe the hit that sprained Nicklas Lidstrom’s knee was dirty. Laperriere went high with his elbow when he didn’t have to and was certainly looking to shake Lidstrom up, not just play the body. TVNZ has just reported that Winston Peters is furious with his party president and new MP Dail Jones over the comments he made this morning about finding a large anonymous donation in December and that he was “completely wrong. Peters also denied to TVNZ that the party had ever received a donation from Owen Glenn, which is accepted. If Peters knows that Glenn has never donated to his party, Peters may know who gave the donation in December. He said he hasn’t spoken to Peters yet and he doesn’t know what TVNZ’s Guyon Espiner told Peters that provoked the reported response. The two questions put to Peters were did he know who the party’s December donor was, and if so, was it Owen Glenn? When I said I had talked to president Dail Jones and that he didn’t know, he said Glenn was aware of that but alluded to the fact that the party was trying to track down leader Winston Peters in Africa. read more
