A man who wrote a fictional blog depicting the kidnapping and murder of Girls Aloud has been cleared of publishing an obscene article. Former civil servant Darryn Walker , 35, was arrested in February 2008 after the Internet Watch Foundation became aware of the blog, entitled ‘Girls (Scream) Aloud’ . He was formally charged last October, but Walker was cleared today (June 29) at Newcastle Crown Court by Judge Esmond Faulks . His defence had argued that the blog was not easily accessible online, reports BBC News . A consultant psychiatrist in the case added that it was “baseless” to suggest a link between reading blogs such as Walker ’s and subsequent violent behaviour. read more

That means any blog that reviews products — whether it is padded by corporations or not — is subject to a thorough examination. While penalties for failure to disclose financial interest have existed in the past, the FTC is broadening the scope of the media it is actively reviewing to cover blogs and bloggers. Professional journalists and product reviewers are beholden to their employers and professional ethics policies, often have to return review products after the review is published. Nonprofessional product review blogs should maintain the integrity of an Internet community where average citizens can freely share ideas without the threat of being swindled by a massive corporation. It also means that if you review products on your personal blog, there’s a good chance that blog will be read by government suits. read more

Nikki Finke has sold her US media and entertainment industry news blog, Deadline Hollywood Daily, to Mail Media Corporation in a deal reported to be worth as much as $15m (£9m). Typically, Finke, the former Newsweek, Los Angeles Times and New York Magazine writer broke news of the sale to MMC yesterday on her own blog, saying the deal would see her become general manager and editor-in-chief. The Wall Street Journal reported “industry insiders” saying the deal was worth $10m while the Financial Times said the deal was “worth about $15m” . Finke started the blog as a 24/7 version of her “Deadline Hollywood” column for the LA Weekly. Since launching three years ago Deadline Hollywood Daily has become required reading after breaking a succession of industry stories, often scooping established Hollywood titles Variety and Hollywood reporter, making Finke one of the US’s foremost entertainment business journalists. Jay Penske, the chairman and chief executive of MMC, praised Finke as a “world-class journalist” and a leading authority on Hollywood, saying the purchase would allow the site to expand its audience reach and influence. read more

But simple blogging startup Posterous thinks some dead blogs may be due for a resurrection. Now the San Francisco startup is offering an “import” feature that lets them bring all their old posts, including media, into their new Posterous blog. Still, a service like Posterous or more established competitor Tumblr (which, incidentally, you can also import to Posterous) tries to make the process easier by removing as many technical barriers as possible — in Posterous’ case by letting you do things like publishing via email or posting cool content you find online via a bookmarklet . The import feature is a nice addition in that vein, and it also helps Posterous make a compelling pitch to users of other services — those who have abandoned a service, who are frustrated with it, or who maintain separate blogs on both Posterous and another platform. This won’t work as well for people with more established blogs, since the import changes each post’s web address (so links to your posts will get broken), but Posterous isn’t aiming for that audience. read more

AuctionBytes Editor Ina Steiner attended the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition (IRCE) in Boston last week where she chaired one day of the Small Retailers track and visited the exhibit hall to talk to vendors and merchants. Internet Retailer is the largest conference geared to all levels of online sellers, and this year, it attracted 368 exhibitors and 5,000 attendees (including speakers, vendors and retailers). There were 91 sessions and 178 speakers with tracks on managing technology; merchandising and website content; marketing; operations; corporate management; small retailers; and web-only retailers (“nothing but ‘net”). Rabinowitz said 20% of shoppers who come to the Lion Brand Yarn website from one of the retailer’s social presences buy merchandise, and Lion Brand Yarn social media users are 83% more likely to be very loyal to the brand compared with those shoppers who don’t use social media. In the exhibit hall, retailers could find services to help them with shipping, payment processing, site search, fulfillment, marketing, product sourcing, shopping carts, ecommerce hosting, gift-wrap solutions, market research, consulting, email marketing, analytics, shopping engines and more. Some vendors showed off services designed to help retailers take advantage of social networking (“social shopping”), such as IMShopping (the founder was one of the co-founders of Andale) and TurnTo . read more
